Ten things you didn’t know about Texas. When you think of someone from Texas, do you automatically picture a character from a Western movie, riding a horse?


Well, brace yourself, because there is a lot more to Texas than stereotypical history. Here are a few fun facts about Texas that you may not have known:

  1. The King Ranch in Texas is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and includes 50,000 head of cattle and more than 2,000 miles of fence.
  2. The world’s first rodeo was held in Pecos, Texas, on July 4, 1883.
  3. Sam Houston, arguably the most famous Texan, was actually born in Virginia. Houston served as governor of Tennessee before coming to Texas.
  4. Austin is considered the live music capital of the world.
  5. Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. The Dublin Dr Pepper, 85 miles west of Waco, still uses pure imperial cane sugar in its product. There is no period after the Dr in Dr Pepper.
  6. Texas possesses three of the top 10 most populous cities in the United States. These cities are Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.
  7. The state’s cattle population is estimated to be near 16 million, almost as many cattle as people.
  8. More land is farmed in Texas than in any other state.
  9. The capitol building in Austin opened May 16, 1888. The dome of the building stands seven feet higher than that of the nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C.
  10. Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of being taken over by the United States without choice.
