Texas winners shine in NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity.

The 2014 NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity, held August 9-17 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the largest show the association has held to date, with a 19 percent increase in stalls and an increase of 600 entries over last year, a 17 percent increase.

.

The show offered ten days of competition that included Show Your Colors, a multi-judge APHA and AQHA show on August 9-10 and world championship classes and an AQHA Special Event for over fences exhibitors on August 16-17, along with a full slate of Open and Non-Pro Breeders Championship Futurity and Open, Amateur and Youth world championship classes.

Winning the Color division of the Breeders Championship Futurity Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle was Christy Christiansen and Hoos Got Chrome. Christensen, who works as the stallion manager at Highpoint Performance Horses, in Pilot Point, Texas, doesn’t often get in the show arena.

“When I do get to show, I love getting to promote the stallions we stand,” she said. “My horse that I raised by Hot Ones Only had to be put down earlier this year. I had the opportunity to least this horse, who is also by Hot Ones Only, so it was fun to get to come out and show. It’s very exciting to win here at the NSBA World Show.”

Sharnai Thompson and It Had To Be Hoo and Jamie West with VS Highroller tied to win the Limited division of the Breeders Championship Futurity Two Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle. Both Not Just Anyhoo and It Had To Be Hoo are also by Hot Ones Only, while VS Highroller is out of the great show mare Vital Signs Are Good.

In the Limited Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle, Farley Sliss rode Sleep Alilbit Longer to the world champion title. The gelding is by Too Sleepy To Zip and out of a Dont Skip Charlie mare.

“We got him last fall from the girls at BSB R11. We were attracted to him because he’s big, pretty and has a great trot,” Sliss said. “I think the judges liked him because he’s really pretty, and he was so consistent and strong.”

Sleep ALilbit Longer also was reserve champion in the Open Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle and the Breeders Championship Futurity Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle. He also represented Too Sleepy To Zip in the Performance Halter Get Of Sire class earlier in the week.

Nancy Sue Ryan returned to the winner’s circle piloting Boys Move Over to win the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle for her daughter, Courtney Brockmueller, and received the June Warren Memorial Trophy as well.

“She’s still very green,” Brockmueller said of her mare, known as Black Betty, who is by Skys Blue Boy. “We just started showing her in April and she had never been in the show environment before that. She’s come such a long way. We bought her from Ashley Bland, and just started working with her and showing her. We qualified her for the AQHA World Show in both Open and Amateur. We just loved that she has such soft movement and is really a unique and lovely mare. Who wouldn’t want her in their broodmare band?”

Brockmueller credits breeder Ashley Bland as well as Highpoint Performance Horses for starting ‘Black Betty.’ “Ashley has such a great eye for evaluating prospects and creating the right cross,” she noted. “And she got a wonderful foundation at Highpoint.” Brockmueller and Boys Move Over were named world champions in Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle.

Two Non-Pro exhibitors tied to win the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle with Sharnai Thompson and Only Blue Couture sharing championship honors with Courtney Brockmueller and Boys Move Over. Thompson won the Limited division of the class. Jerry Erickson and The Kids Got Moxie took the title in the Breeders Championship Futurity Limited Three Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle. The Kids Got Moxie is by NI Fabulous.

More co-champions were named in the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure between Rock Country Kid and Sharnai Thompson and Wearin Only Moonlite, while The Only Leadin Lady and Ty Paris won the Intermediate division of the class.

Thompson and Rock Country Kid also won the Intermediate division as well as the Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure world champion titles. Lauren Love and Wearin Only Moonlite were reserve world champions in both divisions. “Every ride, he gets better,” said Thompson. “He tries really hard. And he’s so much fun to ride and show.”

Thompson noted the gelding will begin to add all around events to his work load after the 2014 AQHA World Championship Show. “We’ve already played with the lead change a little bit but for now we’re concentrating on Western Pleasure,” she said.

In the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure, Rusty Green and Bestseatnthehouse were the unanimous winners for owner Alexandra Chavez. “She was really good,” said Green of the chestnut mare, who is by RL Best Of Sudden.

Shannon Curl piloted No Doubt Im Best to win the Breeders Championship Futurity Intermediate Open Three Year Old Western Pleasure. “She was very good today,” said Curl of the chestnut mare. “What I love about her is that she is always the same, and I think her consistency is what the judges liked about her. It’s very fun – I love to win the big cups here!”

It was an emotional win for Angie Rigdon Cannizzaro, of Purcell, Oklahoma, riding Wearin Only Moonlite for Lauren Love, showing to a world championship in Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure. “This is just the best horse I’ve ever had the privilege to ride,” she said.

“I’m just so blessed that Lauren Love and her trainer Robin Frid let me ride him.” The bay gelding, by Only In The Moonlite and out of a Potential Investment mare, has had a very successful show career so far, going all the way back to a win the All American Quarter Horse Congress Two Year Old Western Pleasure Stakes last year.

Jump Seen in Over Fence Entries
Over fence classes saw an increase of 22 percent over 2013.

One of this year’s first-time exhibitors in the over fence classes as a ten-year-old girl spectators and end gate grooms referred to as “the little girl in pig tails.” Acey Pinkston, of Alice, Texas, earned two world champion titles in NSBA Youth Working Hunter and NSBA Youth Hunter Hack with Hello Darlin.

“I’ve been riding hunters for about two years,” she said. “I went to visit one of my friends, and she was taking jumping lessons, so I went with her. I decided I wanted to do it too.” Pinkston shows under the guidance of David Miller and Scott Jones.

Although she may be new to over fence classes, Pinkston is a tough cowgirl with a lot of experience in the winner’s circle. She is a multiple year Texas state youth rodeo high point and finals all around winner, competing in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying and Straights.

Her father, Wade, is a team roper and calf roper, and her mother, Liz, is a barrel racer who has twice qualified for the National Finals Rodeo and won the NFR average in 2005. Even her brother is a two-time qualifier for the National High School Rodeo Finals.

“I was getting bored with rodeo, and I was looking for a new challenge,” she said. Watch for Pinkston and “Stella” in Youth over fences at the 2014 All American Quarter Horse Congress.

Kamanyawanna Dance won his first two world championship titles on Sunday with Ryan Painter in the irons in NSBA Open Working Hunter and NSBA Senior Hunter Hack

“People may not believe he’s never won a world title, but he has 11 or 12 reserve Congress championships in everything from the Limited Hunter Under Saddle (standing reserve four times, with four different horses beating him) to the Working Hunter Classic,” said Leslie Lange.

“He was great,” said Painter of the 12-year-old gelding. “He jumped the first jump and just cruised through the course. He knows his job and he never wants to make a mistake. If ever there was a horse that deserved to win a world title, he’s it.”

Heroes On Horses

Saturday also saw the Heroes On Horses competition with two classes, a Heroes On Horses Ranch Horse Pleasure and a Heroes On Horses Western Pleasure, both for Independent Riders.

Quinn Sanders, an Army veteran with tours in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, from Dallas, Texas, showed Black Magic to the world champion title in the Heroes On Horses Ranch Horse Pleasure.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever showed here, and this brings tears to my eyes,” Sanders said. “I’ve been riding with the therapeutic stable for about three and a half years. I have post traumatic stress disorder and severe depression. I don’t know where I would be if it hadn’t been for the horses.”
